Style Staples: Tailored Eclectic (Part 1)

by lauren on February 5, 2013

Today I am kicking of a series that I am calling “Style Staples”.  Over the next two weeks I will be introducing pieces that I deem as necessary for your wardrobe, depending on how you categorize your style.  These clothing and accessory items will be versatile pieces that will carry you through multiple outfits, and will be more specifically fit towards one particular style group.  While I believe there are some items that all women could benefit from owning, I don’t see the value in telling women that the same 20 staples are going to work for every single one of us, because it’s just not the case.  We all have different likes and different ways we would like to portray ourselves, so this series will give you the opportunity to pick which style you think you’re most closely aligned to and consider purchasing some of the style staples within that group!

one: TOPSHOP patterned dress (currently out of stock) // two: TOPSHOP black blazer // three: ASOS bow heel // four: Tory Burch Jayden cream blouse (sold out) // five:  TOPSHOP abstract animal print sweater //  six:  Loren Hope bracelet // seven: French Connection peplum top // eight: J Brand jeans // nine: Stella McCartney glasses // ten: TOPSHOP leggings // eleven:  Loeffler Randall flats // twelve:  Bauble Bar necklace // thirteen: Capwell necklace // fourteen: DVF handbag // fifteen: Gianvito Rossi heels // sixteen:  Loeffler Randall flats // seventeen:  Bakers flats (sold out) // eighteen: Bauble Bar bracelet // nineteen: Clare Vivier clutch // twenty: French Connection jacket // twenty one: Tibi dress // twenty two: Equipment blouse // twenty three: Chicnova cape // twenty four: Club Monaco necklace

Who is the Tailored Eclectic Dresser? Tailored eclectic is for the woman who loves to dress up, appreciates the fit that comes with an expensive designer piece, and loves classic pieces but also has no fear of injecting a bold color or a truly “interesting” piece into her wardrobe.  She has a lifestyle where dressing to the nines is necessary, whether its for flying through the corporate ranks or working with high-end clients.

Things to keep in mind for the Tailored Eclectic Dresser:  If this is your style-type, you want to make sure you maintain a balance of some more dressed-down pieces so that your wardrobe doesn’t become too fancy.  Make sure you add some basics to your wardrobe that can be less formal when necessary, like a good pair of jeans and some basic flats.  Also, if this is your style but you can’t afford the high-end, quite-as-well-made pieces, buy more budget friendly items and become really good friends with the best local tailor you can find.

Stores to Shop (High End): Net-a-PorterOtte

Stores to Shop (Budget): Everlane (for the silkiest $80 blouses), Last Call, The Outnet, Topshop

Examples of other Tailored Eclectic Women: Olivia Palermo & Anh Sundstrom (of 9 to 5 chic)

If “Tailored Eclectic” isn’t your cup of tea, not to worry! I will be showcasing Classic Preppy style on Thursday, and more to come next week, so stay tuned!

So curious to see what the rest of these are! I find putting a name (or some good descriptive phrases) to my style makes for much smarter shopping… I like classics, but this one isn’t entirely my style, partly because my life is much more casual – but I do love some of the pieces (naturally the ones I was most drawn to are the most expensive, ha) and I do love Olivia’s style.

This is cool Lauren. When I grow up, I will dress like this, but for now, it is Classic Preppy.
I think I do this because of the word CLASSIC. I don’t want my clothes to be in this season
and out the next! What do you think? Do you think the preppy clothes can provide more mileage?

    • http://stylizedexistence.com/blog Lauren Corso

Hi Quietgirl – I really think it depends on your lifestyle. Based on what you told me in a past post, it seems preppy is more your style. I think this particular method of dressing is more suited toward someone who has a lifestyle where they consistently feel the need to WOW people with their clothes. Most of us have a more casual lifestyle and most of these clothes would end up hanging in the closet. While most of the pieces above (aside from the printed items) will definitely stand the test of time, if you have a more casual lifestyle, these timeless pieces still may not fit well with your current wardrobe.

I reviewed all the 4 different types and I don’t fit into any of them. I’m more of the rugged look you mentioned in your October 11, 2012 post. So what type of rules does that fall into?

    • http://stylizedexistence.com/blog Lauren Corso

Zlovely- these four style types are not an all-encompassing view of all styles, just the four I chose to focus on this time around. There will be more from this series in the spring.
