How to Wear It: Navy Striped Shirt

by lauren on January 8, 2013

I heard you all loud and clear when you told me via the comments on my 2013 resolutions that you all wanted more ideas for versatility in your wardrobe and you loved the “teaching” aspect of this blog.  Since I am not a millionaire, I also like to get a lot of wear out of all of my pieces, and one thing you can always find me wearing is a navy striped top.  I know it’s the preppy nature in me, but the classic feel of a navy shirt and the fact that you can wear it so many ways is just so attractive to me.  I do have other striped shirts, but the navy will always be #1 in my book.

You can wear it for work and on the weekends, you can wear it with tons of colors, and you can make it look a bit edgy or full-on preppy.  I love how it looks with a mustard skirt and a tweed jacket.  A classic camel ballet flat with tie bow rounds out the look really well.  You can also wear it with some destroyed skinny denim (LOVE THESE), an army jacket, and ankle length boots (here on sale for $87!) for a stylish yet casual look.  Lastly, I love navy with a bright pair of corduroy pants, a jean jacket, and some clean white converses!

I know some of you also have some other good ways to wear a navy striped shirt, so feel free to share in the comments!

Oh how I love my navy striped tees – I am almost embarrassed to admit how many I own! Lately I’m loving mine layered under a plaid button down (leave it open & unbuttoned) and with a quilted jacket & bright red skinnies! :)

So happy you are back, Lauren !!!! Love these looks and I have the striped shirts to build them. What do you think of Converses on women in their 50′s? Would you style your mother in them?

    • http://stylizedexistence.com/blog Lauren Corso

hi there quietgirl! For a woman in her 50′s, I would go with something a bit less “juvenile” but still casual – like a TOMS shoe (http://rstyle.me/n/efhncd4w) or a moccasin (http://rstyle.me/~aCIo) — what do you think of those options?

Thanks for the comment. I agree. What do you think about classic Keds? I like the eyelets!

I think my striped tshirt might be the most versatile thing in my closet. It goes with absolutely everything, and is almost always a major upgrade from the plain white tshirt.

      i agree!

    Hey Lauren,
I am a not the thinnest person; still fighting the war against my weight. Question: what should I be looking for in a striped shirt? I really don’t have a waist because most of my weight sits on my stomach. Should I look for wider stripes, paneling? What do you recommend? I have wanted a striped shirt for the longest but don’t know what to look for. Thanks so much!

    • http://stylizedexistence.com/blog Lauren Corso

Hey Shannan – a thinner stripe like the one above is going to look better, but the real trick for you is layering an open jacket or cardigan over the striped top and not wearing the striped shirt by itself. That’s a “thinning” trick because if you put a jacket or open cardigan over another shirt, you will notice that it draws your eye to the area in between – thus creating an illusion of a slimmer midsection. Does that make sense?

      • Shannan

Yes it does. Thinner stripe. Got it. Thanks so much for responding back.

I have a soft spot with stripes — but nothing beats a classic white and navy combo! Great outfits — especially love the mustard colored skirt!
