Ikat Love

May 15, 2012

I recently made a vow to myself to stop purchasing polyester tops after reading Erika’s comment on my Why Do you Shop post.  I realized I was buying quantity over quality and my money was wasted on things that were falling apart only a few months after I originally purchased them.  I also think polyester tops hold smell (deodorant and sweat… ew… no thank you).  Anyway, before I get too far off the reservation with this post, once I made my vow to purchase better quality clothing, one of the first things I spotted was this silk ikat print tank and I fell in LOVE.  The colors and the pattern were too pretty to pass up, and this shirt is so perfectly flowy and lightweight.  Perfect for Summer.

I recently made a very similar promise to myself because I was getting so disappointed with having to replace items from Old Navy or Forever 21 that weren’t holding up well. It’s hard when you’re trying to stay within a budget, but I think it’s worth it in the long run to pay a little more for well-made clothing. Love these bright colors and I have that same yellow bangle! :)

Such a gorgeous top Lauren! Love it with the fuchsia pants…and quality over quantity is definitely worth it most of the time :)

While I agree that quality in clothing, shoes, etc., is very important (and my husband would attest to the fact that I love labels and quality), I’d like to offer a different opinion. While my mainstays set me back quite a bit and are my go-to pieces over the years, sometimes I go for the cheaper quality. These times include:

    – When a fashion is only around for about a minute (color mint, neons, type of shoe), I purchase cheaper items to enjoy the fad without investing in it. When the minute is over, I can throw them out without guilt.
    – When I’m in the mood for a change but don’t want to spend a lot of money, a new cheaper top or dress lifts my mood, or provides a different look.
    – When I see something in someone’s blog that I like, I might go for a cheaper version of it to emmulate the look.

Basically, I like to mix and match. I think there’s enough room in everyone’s closet for a wide range of quality and costs. Well, my closet is pretty full but you know what I mean. 😉

Love this top! There is nothing better than silk for summer. You make some great points in the silk v polyester debate. My biggest issue is with polyesters ability to hold heat on a warm summer day…sweatfest.
